What is GRP/FRP? A Plain-English Guide for Buyers
If you're specifying a water tank, grating, or enclosure for an industrial project, you've likely come across the terms GRP and FRP. They refer to the same family of material: Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), also known as Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) — a fiber-reinforced polymer made of a plastic resin matrix reinforced with fine glass fibers.
Why glass fiber and plastic together?
On its own, plastic resin is relatively weak. Glass fiber, on the other hand, has very high tensile strength but is brittle when it's not embedded in a supporting matrix. Combining the two creates a composite material that is lightweight, strong and resistant to corrosion — properties that are hard to achieve with steel, concrete or standard plastics on their own.
Where is GRP/FRP used?
Because it doesn't rust and can be molded into complex shapes, GRP/FRP is widely used in:
- Water and chemical storage tanks
- Gratings, ladders and structural profiles
