Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) Explained

Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) is a pre-formulated polyester material reinforced with glass fibers, specifically designed for compression molding. It's a widely used manufacturing method across GRP/FRP products, from water tank panels to electrical equipment housings and automotive components.

How SMC becomes a ZISIF tank panel

Union Fiber manufactures its ZISIF GRP Hotpress Panel Tank panels through hydraulic compression of SMC, using an isophthalic unsaturated polyester base resin reinforced with Type "E" glass fiber. The material is molded at temperatures of up to 150°C using heavy hydraulic press machines, producing panels that are physically strong with a smooth, finished surface.

Why hot-press SMC matters for quality

SMC provides superior surface quality and consistent mechanical properties, and is well suited to larger components that require enhanced strength. The result is a tank panel with excellent dimensional consistency, which is important for a modular, sectional tank design where panels must fit together precisely on-site.

Our SMC-manufactured panels are further tested in-house at a 6x safety factor via hydraulic pressure testing, and are WRAS-certified and SASO-compliant. Read more on our certifications page.
